Today's Poll Question

Was Friday the last time we’ll see snow until next fall?
Of course. It’s spring now.
No. Call me a pessimist, but we could even have snow in April.

Gun incidents, stabbing keep police busy

In less than 11 hours, the Grand Island Police Department responded to at least three calls involving guns and one stabbing.

It began with a call Thursday afternoon to report that a gun had been pointed at two boys who were playing at Stolley Park Elementary School.

The boys, ages 10 and 11, said a man and a woman in a vehicle pointed a gun at them between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Thursday, said police Sgt. Danny Dubbs.

There were no further descriptions of the people or the vehicle on the report, he said.

No one was injured and no one has been arrested, he said.

Police also responded to a call that a shooting had occurred sometime between 10:25 p.m. and midnight Thursday near 16th and Elm streets, he said.

Bryan Richardson, 25, of 608 W. 16th St., reported being threatened verbally and seeing a gun fired in the air “for effect,” Dubbs said.

The shots were fired from the driver’s side window of a vehicle, according to witnesses. People reported anywhere from five to 12 shots being fired, Dubbs said.

Officers found casings from a .40 caliber handgun and a .22 caliber gun at the scene, so it is possible that two weapons were actually fired, he said.

Police arrested two people in connection with the shooting.

Raymond Casares, 23, 1014 N. Beal St., was charged Friday in Hall County Court with terroristic threats and using a gun to commit a felony. Herman Pacheco, 24, of Omaha was charged with aiding and abetting terroristic threats. Preliminary hearings for both men were set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5.

Casares’ bond was set at 10 percent of $50,000 and he was ordered not to have contact with Richardson. Pacheco’s bond was set at 10 percent of $15,000.

Dubbs said when police made contact with Pacheco he denied involvement in the shooting and obstructed officers from finding other suspects.

Casares was identified as the driver, Dubbs said.

Police believe a second shooting on North Lambert, near Lincoln Park and Lincoln Elementary School, is related to the shots being fired at 16th and Elm streets, he said.

Debra and Hayden Snyder of 809 N. Lambert reported their home was hit by gunfire Thursday night. No time was given, Dubbs said. According to the Police Department’s media report, the incident was reported at 11:24 p.m. Thursday

Dubbs said he didn’t know which shooting occurred first.

In a unrelated matter, a man reported being stabbed sometime between 1:20 and 1:30 a.m. Friday at 611 Yund St.

Mohamed Elmi told officers he was stabbed in the stomach with a knife while in the parking lot of the apartment building, Dubbs said.

He believed a suspect was being interviewed by police investigators Friday afternoon.

Elmi’s condition wasn’t available because he isn’t listed in the patient directory at St. Francis Medical Center.

“We’re hoping it’s quiet all day today,” Dubbs said Friday afternoon.
