WASHINGTON (AP) — Over the past 18 months, 29 prisoners have escaped from federal lockups across the U.S. — and nearly half still have not been caught. At some of the institutions, doors are left unlocked, security cameras are broken and officials sometimes don't notice an inmate is missing for hours.
LINCOLN – Authorities have been notified about an inmate missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L).
Michelle Dicini, 38, had worked for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services since April 2019. She has resigned.
"The bottom line is this: Our clients were simply asking for the ability to marry. Marriage is a fundamental right, including for Nebraskans who are incarcerated,” said Danielle Conrad, executive director of the ACLU of Nebraska.
“This is a huge step forward and one that is sure to be welcomed by staff members as well as inmates,” Prisons Director Scott Frakes said.
"The NDCS has a policy and procedure for housing male inmates sentenced to the death penalty, but does not have a specific policy or procedure for housing female inmates sentenced to the death penalty," her attorney said.
The policy change affects about 800 of the more than 5,300 inmates in state prisons.
The state had refused the inmate's request, prompting the woman — identified as "Jane Roe" — to file a federal civil rights lawsuit on Friday.
