Caregiver Tip 1
A recent study conducted by the University of Michigan concluded that 78% of those who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s say that care giving is stressful, and that caregivers need access to support and resources. One of the best resources for help is a caregiver support group. Yet a common reaction to the idea is, “I don’t need to hear someone else’s problems – I have enough of my own!” If this is you, resolve to take care of yourself in 2018!
Caregiver Tip 2
If you know someone who is caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s at home, it’s a commitment that can take a toll. Nearly half of family caregivers spend more than $5,000 a year on expenses such as medication and in home services. Other costs are harder to measure. Caregivers often must take time off from work, give up personal interests, and the pressure can trigger their own health issues. Yet most are reluctant to ask for help. Show the caregivers in your life some love this month.
Caregiver Tip 3
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a good opportunity to shine a light on the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). It’s the leading organization for Alzheimer’s research and education, working on a global, national and local level to promote brain health and help all those affected by Alzheimer’s & other dementia. It staffs a 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), sends advocates to Washington, and sponsors support groups all over the country
Caregiver Tip 4
Alzheimer’s can have a big impact on every member of the family, including children. If you have a loved one with dementia, the young people in your family might have questions about what’s happening. It’s important to answer these questions openly and honestly. It will also help to share with them the changes the disease might bring now and in the future.
Caregiver Tip 5
Have you ever forgotten why you walked into a room – and then wondered if you might be heading for Alzheimer’s? According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 10 early warning signs of Alzheimer’s. One of the most common signs is memory loss. While it’s normal to sometimes forget a name or appointment as we get older, a person with Alzheimer’s may ask the same question over and over, or increasingly rely on reminder notes or others to help them with things they used to handle on their own.
