York County Weed Superintendent Ernie Price met with the York County Commissioners on two separate topics.
The first was for them to approve the county’s weed program assessment, which they did. This assessment from the state noted a deficiency from last year, in that last April there was no road superintendent (which was the interim until Price was officially appointed). “Other than that, it turned out pretty good,” Price said.
“Overall, this has been a really good transition” of Price moving into the weed superintendent role, said Commissioner Andy Bowman.
They also approved a grant application, in which the county will be asking for $10,000 to be used to survey areas of infestation, particularly when it comes to phragmites.
“We will then be able to look at our needs as phragmites are popping up more and more.”
“It really is a no-brainer to apply as phragmites are showing up and we will have to expend this money one way or another,” Bowman said. “This will help us get a handle on it before it blows up.”
Price said the patches of phragmites, a noxious weed, are “out there. We have been looking at the areas and it is a growing problem. There is quite a bit on the state right-of-way areas, especially along the York bypass, as it likely was moved in with material, dirt, etc.”
Bowman added how “some NRD and city properties have some phragmites areas too. It is water-related but it is also carried by birds and can spread in the right-of-way areas through mowing and blowing.”
“Battling this is going to be an ongoing battle,” Price added.
