Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's golf team carded a 36-hole total of 583 – third best in school history – to place fourth at the Newman Invitational Tuesday in Andover, Kan.
The 15-team event was held at the par-71 Terradyne C.C. (5,798 yards). The average round both Monday and Tuesday was just over 76.
UNK had rounds of 293 and 290 to trail only Southwestern Oklahoma State (574), Wayne State (579) and Central Oklahoma (580). The Lopers slipped past Washburn by a stroke with eight teams coming below 590. UNK was coming off a school-record 575 (290-285) two weeks ago and managed a 582 (290-292) four years ago in the fall.
Minnesota junior Calie Dockter led the way by tying for 10th place with a 3-over 145 (75-70). Her tourney featured five birdies including two on the par-5 5th hole (357 yards). SWOSU went 1-2 led by medalist Daniela Espinoza (5-under 137).
Next, Kansas seniors Liz Lyons (T-15th/4-over 146; 73-73) and Claire Berquist (T-22nd/5-over 147; 73-74). Lyons had three birdies each round with Berquist having an eagle on the par-5 18th hole (449 yards) on Monday. It was one of six eagles recorded in the tourney.
Finally, Swedish sophomore Pella Broms (150; 72-78) and Mexican freshman Paulina Flores (150; 77-73) both tied for 35th with Texas senior Sofia Wildeman (155; 77-78) the individual this week. This trio combined for 11 birdies overall.
The Lopers head to the Nebraska Intercollegiate the first week of October.
